audience feedback

After completing my rough cut I had to get some feedback.

For my audience feedback a asked a few people to watch my rough-cut and write down anything that may have been out of place or just didn't work with the story line. I also asked them to tell me what they thought about the story-line.

Positive feedback : One of the things that worked very well was the the locations used . It made the artist relateable to every single woman who may have experienced the same thing .
Having some scenes shot in her home also makes the video allot more intimate and personal.
The camera angles and movement is good as well as the.
establishment of the artist very good.

Negative feedback : More shots of the artist singing would be better

The story line isn't as clear as it could be. Since the song is called superman maybe use some clips from a super man movie just short clips

Camera is  little shaky in some shots (maybe stabilize in movie or re-film the scenes )

Goodwin theory Analysis -Rihanna cheers

Looking at Rihanna's Cheers (Drink To That) music video:
Fragmented Performance. Shots change between a live performance and clips behind the scenes whilst Rihanna is getting ready to perform. There are other clips of her in situations such as spending time with friends, driving and on the beach. There are several clips of Avril Lavigne who performs on the chorus.
She's a girl and is sexualised and the idea of gaze is played on as she wears revealing clothing. This also conforms to her style. Many shots show how her style has changed, such as clips of her with long brown hair but then other shots of her with her current red look.

The shots of Avril Lavigne feature a skateboard, which is a feature of her style and genre of Pop Rock. This is a contrast to Rihannas style of R&B and Hip Hop. Carribean style in the way she sings, the colours and the locations in the video.

Links between the lyrics and visuals with drinking. The lyrics say 'with my raybans on' and she points to her glasses. The music fazes in and out when it is on a deck and Rihanna does the motions of scratching.

There is intertextual reference when she uses a camera. Some of the footage she uses is used within the video is also from what seems to be her personal recordings.

Further reaserch

After choosing to produce an R&B music video I continued to research into other R&B artist and  music  videos both male and female, to draw a few ideas of what my own Video could look like. some of which are narrative based and others performance based.
Below are links to some of the videos I watched.
Link to Trey Songz 'Smatphones'
This video shows the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals there is also allot of voyeurism, especially with the women and there lack of clothing within the video.

Link to Beyonce 'Love on Top'

After washing a these videos i can conclude that in general R&b Videos are expected to feature :
The use of the 'Fade ' from shot to shot - this presents a smooth change throughout the video which sets the tone of the whole video -This is fitting to genre being rhythm and blues (Blues being relaxing and calming)

The R&B lifestyle is glamorous and expensive -which is shown through the pricey  props (Fancy Mise en scene)

The pace from scene to scene flows with the beat of the song - making it very captivating to the audience

The mise en scene is minimal (Big empty rooms ) this  puts all the focus on the artist singing. R&B music is all about the artist communicating with the and connection with the audience

The lighting is normally very low  to convey the meaning of the song -whether its Sad and emotive or  sexy and relaxing the lighting is adjusted accordingly.

There is a connection between the lyrics of the song and what is being shown   on the screen - the artist is not only telling  the audience their story but showing them.

R&B-

Evolving out of jump blues in the late '40s, R&B laid the groundwork for rock & roll. R&B kept the tempo and the drive of jump blues, but its instrumentation was sparer and the emphasis was on the song, not improvisation. It was blues chord changes played with an insistent backbeat. During the '50s, R&B was dominated by vocalists like Ray Charles and Ruth Brown, as well as vocal groups like the Drifters and the Coasters. Eventually, R&B metamorphosed into soul, which was funkier and looser than the pile-driving rhythms of R&B. Soul came to describe a number of R&B-based music styles. From the bouncy, catchy acts at Motown to the horn-driven, gritty soul of Stax/Volt, there was an immense amount of diversity within soul. During the first part of the '60s, soul music remained close to its R&B roots. However, musicians pushed the music in different directions; usually, different regions of America produced different kinds of soul. In urban centers like New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago, the music concentrated on vocal interplay and smooth productions. In Detroit, Motown concentrated on creating a pop-oriented sound that was informed equally by gospel, R&B, and rock & roll. In the South, the music became harder and tougher, relying on syncopated rhythms, raw vocals, and blaring horns. All of these styles formed soul, which ruled the black music charts throughout the '60s and also frequently crossed over into the pop charts. During the '60s and '70s, soul began to splinter apart -- artists like James Brown and Sly Stone developed funk; Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff initiated Philly soul with the O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes; and later in the decade, danceable R&B became a mass phenomenon with the brief disco fad. During the '80s and '90s, the polished, less earthy sound of urban and quiet storm ruled the airwaves, but even then, R&B began adding stylistic components of hip-hop until -- by the end of the millennium -- there were hundreds of artists who featured both rapping and singing on their records.

Shots used

In my music video i did my best to incorporate as many different shots into it. I mostly used close ups and mid shots so that my audience could really connect with the artist and feeling, tone and mood of the video.
